AthLex Consulting provides advice on key areas of athletes’ and alike economic rights, including playing and performance rights, image rights, intellectual property (IP) rights, sponsorship and endorsement rights, individual media and broadcasting entitlements, and post-career and legacy rights. In addition to advisory, AthLex Consulting offers advocacy and strategic support to athletes and alike navigating the commercial dimensions of sport. This includes guidance on name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights, commercial opportunities, and endorsement arrangements, as well as practical resources on contract interpretation, negotiation fundamentals, and risk management.

Dr. Layckan van Gensen
is the Founder of AthLex Consulting, a specialist firm that reflects her commitment to education, development, and athlete empowerment.
Her work sits at the intersection of sports law, policy, and practice, with a particular emphasis on protecting and advancing athletes’ economic rights.
Dr. van Gensen holds a Doctorate in Sports Law, with her academic research focused on image rights and their legal recognition within sport. She actively advocates for policy reform, campaigning for the recognition of a discrete image right in South Africa. Her advocacy is driven by a commitment to strengthening legal frameworks that protect athletes’ commercial interests and ensure fair participation in the economic value they generate.
